Age?Thirty-seven, says Sabrina, secure in the knowledge that she does not look her age. And while her business is about youth, fashion designer Abu Jani's younger sister, also knows that her talent puts her well ahead of everyone else. MTV's newest stylist, Sabrina is the woman behind the look of vee-jays such as Maria Goretti and Amrita Aurora as also well styled and co-ordinated ad-films like the Debeers ad campaign. This without any formal training as her life started out really differently.Let's start at the beginning ...
Married?
"I was, at 17 and have come a long way since then." Sabrina had an arranged marriage just after she finished school. It did not work out, so she left her husband. But she has no regrets. For her the glass is always half full and never half empty.
Did the experience leave her bitter?
Not at all. "My in-laws were wonderful, I just didn't get along with my husband."
Coming home must've been hard?
"I have no words to explain how nice myfamily were. They were really supportive." And guess what? The ever-optimistic Sabrina has nothing against the institution of marriage, and even hopes to get married again. "If I find the right man, then I will get married again." n So how did Sabrina become a stylist and model co-ordinator?
She started by working as a co-ordinator at Rediffusion. "In 1989, I went to London for Abu and Sandeep's fashion show. I helped out backstage and when I came back I thought: `What am I going to do?'. Someone suggested model co-ordination." And after two years at Rediffusion she started working for Abu and Sandeep.
How was it working for her brother?
Again Sabrina has nothing negative to say about her six year stint with the designer duo. "It gave me a lot of exposure. I used to be a real introvert, and working for them helped me come out of my shell."
Then why did she leave them?
"I wanted to do something of my own, so I started model-coordination and styling. Earlier this year, I started stylingfor MTV." This job suits her fine as she does not need to go to work every day. "It gives me a lot of freedom. They call me whenever there is a shoot." n What does she think of the MTV style of dressing?
"They give me a brief which I have to work around. Vee-jays are such fun. But personally I prefer to wear jeans and T-shirts and all my formals clothes come from Abu and Sandeep." But obviously.
How important are clothes to her?
"I look at a lot of fashion magazines and I know exactly what is in." But Sabrina insists she is not a fashion victim. "I wear what I like and what I feel I look good in."
n Which of society's icons does this free-spirited style queen believe has grace?
Dimple Kapadia, Parmeshwar Godrej, who has maintained herself so well, and Mrs Bachchan. Funny how Sabrina's choice of stylish women are all her brother's clients!
Does she miss not having had any formal training?
"None of us do. My elder brother, Jehangir, is an artist. If you have creativity within youthen you do not need any formal training."n And with a designer and a stylist in the family, does she have time for anything else except clothes?
"I love travelling." Though she admits that she tends to spend a lot of time shopping, which makes travelling a very expensive hobby. She also loves to read thrillers, work out and walk on the beach. She loves everything challenging. "I am not scared of heights, I would love to try parachuting. I am a real free spirit."
And she doesn't mind making a fool of herself?
"No. At the Benson and Hedges launch there was this trampoline and I just got up and started jumping up and down. I did not care that others were staring."
What is this style queen most likely to say?
"You live only once so make the most of it."
And what is she least likely to say?
"To dwell on the past."
