PATNA, Aug 24: Violence marked the dawn-to-dusk Bihar bandh called by the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal today in protest against Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raids on Chief Minister Rabri Devi's official residence, affecting normal life across the state.Munger SP Raghuvansh Prasad Yadav said that suspected RJD supporters determined to enforce the bandh, set on fire two bogies of a train at gate number five between Jamalpur and Munger stations in the morning.
The fire was doused and no one was injured in the incident, he said.Bandh supporters also squatted on tracks near Jamalpur station to disrupt the movement of trains, he said.
In the state capital, RJD activists broke window panes and damaged a machine at the ticket counter at Patna railway junction, official sources said.A stampede-like situation was witnessed near Begusarai railway station when passengers, including some army jawans travelling in the 5621-Up North-East Express beat up bandh supporters who attempted to intercept the train'smovement, police said.
Five persons, including a public prosecutor Sukhdeo Yadav, RJD state secretary Vijay Kumar Paswan, were among those who suffered injuries in the clash, the police said.
A Begusarai report quoting officials said bandh supporters launched a dharna on tracks at Sahebpur Kamal, Lakshminia, Teghara and Begusarai stations, paralysing movement of rail traffic.
The National Highway 31 was also blocked at several places by RJD activists in Begusarai district, the sources said.
The bandh was total in Gaya, Nawada, Aurangabad and Jehanabad under the Magadh range but train services on the Grand Chord rail line between Gaya and Aurangabad stations of the Eastern Railway were unaffected, DIG (Magadh range) S K Bharadwaj said.
The sources said RJD supporters, armed with lathis and hockey sticks, descended on streets in Gaya township to enforce the bandh. In the state capital, train services were affected as RJD supporters squatted on tracks at Patna and Patna City railway stations, thesources said.
The Howrah-Danapur and a few other express trains were stopped for several hours at Patna City as a result.
Shops and major business establishments downed their shutters and vehicular traffic kept off the roads as party activists took out processions, the sources said.
Private bus operators suspended their services and state owned buses also did not ply to and from here, the sources said.
The sources said all educational institutions were closed in Patna and attendance in state and Central Government offices was affected.
