Centre is ignoring teachers' stir: Dal
AGENCIES
MADURAI, Aug 24: The Tamil Nadu Janata Dal general secretary K John Moses today criticised the Central Government for its `delay in finding a solution' to the ongoing strike by university and college teachers, adding that Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi chose to go abroad during the crucial period rather than solve the vexed issue. In a press statement here, he said the Centre should accept at least the `fair demands' of the teachers immediately as, he said, the students were affected by the strike. At a time when the Central Government employees had received new pay scales, it was unfortunate that teachers' pay had not been revised since 1986, he said. The government should also remove the anomaly in the pay structure between an experienced teacher and a new entrant, Moses said.Meanwhile, the striking teachers observed a fast today to press for implementation of University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scales instead of the Rastogi Commission recommendation accepted by the government.
