MUMBAI, Aug 24: Iganatius Silvester's injury time strike floored defending champions Salgaocar in a pre-quarterfinal match of the Kalyani Black Label Federation Cup football match at the Cooperage here today.Ignatius's header, few seconds before the final whistle, off a cross from his younger brother Earnest dashed the hopes of the Goan team.
SBT will take on the winners between FC Kochin and Mohun Bagan who will clash here on August 31.
Salgaocar's strikers will rue a spate of missed chances right through the encounter.
The first-half did not witness good football except a long range try from Jude Odegah which forced the SBT 'keeper Feroz Sheriff to stretch full. Salgaocar began the second half in an attacking mode and it was only a matter of time before they began creating opportunities.
However, strikers Alvito D'Cunha and Nigerian Jude Odegah spurned a couple of chances each at the outset of the session Alvito failed to control a half-volley in the 47th minute while just two minutes laterOdegah headed Venkatesh's cross against the post.
Salgaocar could still score but Satish Kumar attempting to bury the rebound drew goalkeeper Sheriff to a fine save.
Salgaocar, well and truly in control midway through the second half, continued to push their rivals from Kerala into deep defence and the chances kept coming.
The best scoring opportunity fell to the substitute Denis Cabral three minutes before the end. He found himself one-on-one against Sheriff following a through pass from Odegah. The former Churchill striker hit straight into the goalkeeper when he could have far better by merely placing the ball into goal.
Salgaocar pieced together another goal-threatening move in the dying minutes. Substitute Derrick Periera's free-kick from the top of the box found Venkatesh who could only place his shot straight into the 'keeper's hands.
SBT made their first -- and only -- attack from the left when Earnest crossed the ball into the goalmouth from a throw-in. Ignatius, lurking at the edge of thearea, struck with a header which deflected off a hapeless Juje Siddi in goal.
Salgaocar coach Shabbir Ali lamented his team's horrendous finishing. An understandably buoyant SBT coach NM Najeeb, coach SBT said, "They played the game and created more chances but we scored off the only chance that came our way."
