Indu Anto's guardians want a CBI inquiry

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Aug 24: The controversy over sixteen-year-old Sophia College hostelite Indu Indu's death today took an interesting turn with the girl's parents demanding that the case be handed over to the CBI and the investigating officer claiming that the case would be shut soon.

Gamdevi police station is now waiting for expert opinion on Indu's personal diaries; suggestion from another set of doctors about the possible line of treatment that could have been followed; and Jaslok Hospital's clarification as to why police were not informed in time. ``In a matter of days, the case would be closed,'' said Senior Inspector D C Wilson.

However, Indu's local guardian, A G Johnson, is not giving up so easily. ``We have appealed to higher authorities for a CBI enquiry. If need be, we will move a court,'' he said. He has raised questions about the way the case was handled. ``Why did the police take four days to do a panchnama even after failing to get the dying declaration? Shouldn't they have been more quick in thisregard?'' he asked.

Senior Inspector Wilson, however, maintained it was common to carry out ``panchnamas over a couple of days in consonance with our inquiry proceedings. Investigations take time.''

Meanwhile, the hostelites, including those named by Indu's father as responsible for ragging her to death, have denied she was ever ragged. They described her as a shy girl. ``A difficult girl to communicate with, she carried this lost look on face. She looked confused and scared,'' goes their common refrain. The wardens too deny there was any ragging. ``At worst, a mass introduction where the freshers were asked some simple questions and may be they were asked to sing a song,'' they said. The Sophia principal maintained that Indu had never complained about anyone troubling her.
