Anti-Shugden agenda flares up conflict

Archana Phull
CHANDIGARH, Aug 23: The ``anti-Shugden agenda'' of a convention to be hosted by the United Cholsum Organisation of the Tibetans in McLeod Ganj from August 27 has again flared up the Dalai-deity conflict with over 120 members of the Dorje Shugden Charitable and Religious Society, Delhi deciding to throng the venue, without any invitation, to seek direct ``evidence of Cholsum accusations on Chinese funding to the hard core Shugden to divide the Tibetan community.''

A confrontation between the Shugdens and the participants at the Cholsum convention is apprehended as the deity supporters have clearly termed the agenda ``a planned propaganda of the Dalai Lama followers to alienate the Shugden worshipers from the Tibetan mainstream for uncalled for reasons, which they are opposed to.'' A written representation to different Tibetan government offices, the Dalai Lama's office and the Cholsum organisation to this effect was made earlier this month.

The venue of the Cholsum convention is the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts and about 1,000 delegates from various Tibetan organisations, religious traditions, monasteries and self-support group of Tibetans (all opposed to the sect) would participate in the deliberations based on the ``ulterior motives of the Shugden followers against the Dalai Lama, the supreme spiritual leader of the Tibetans.''

Reports of the agenda of the Cholsum organisation circulated amidst the Tibetan community-in-exile, terms the Dorje Society as a representative of the ``Tibetan enemy'' and names three forerunners of the Shugden cult, Kalsang Gyatso, Ganchen Lama and Chime Tsering as the ``key activists'' at work to promote the Chinese cause against Tibet. They allege that they are being used by the communist leadership to undermine the prestige of the Dalai Lama and the existence of the Tibetan government-in-exile by inventing international issues. The effort on the part of Cholsum Orgnaisation is reported to be the identification and exposure of the bad elements before the Tibetan general public, which has irked the Shugdens.

Chime Tsering, general secretary of the Dorje Society, while talking to ENS over telephone said: ``We have not been invited by the Cholsum organisation to present our viewpoint as a bid to sideline us from the Tibetan society.''

He said Shugden delegates from New Delhi were coming to McLeod Ganj on August 27 to ``explain their position and seek evidence from the Cholsum organistation on the spot about their allegations that China is funding the Dorje Forum.''

The spokesman of the society, Lobsang Gyaltsen alleged that he had intimated to the concerned organisation and other Tibetan offices, including the Dalai Lama's office, about the society's willingness to settle the controversial religious issue through discussions, but none responded to the communication repeatedly sent in the past months.

``In case we are not allowed to enter the convention hall, we will peacefully circulate our written version among Tibetans present there and in McLeod Ganj. We want that the allegations against the Shugde cult be proved or disproved once for all in view of the Tibetan struggle,'' Gyaltsen said.

The Cholsum organisation, which has reportedly been propagating the theory of suspected Shugden hand in some violent attacks on the Dalai Lama in the past two years, says the convention and its agenda is their internal matter and the Shugdens would not be allowed to participate.

With tension building up, SP Kangra, K.C. Sadyal said:``We would take preventive measures, if required.'' He confirmed that he had been approached by both the sides a few days ago.
