CHANDIGARH, Aug 24: The advocates of Sector 17 District Courts here today gheraoed the Estate Office in protest against the removal of alleged illegal structures from the courts complex on Saturday.Sixty-odd advocates, led by District Court Bar Association president A.S. Chahal, marched to the Sector 17 Estate Office (also known as Deputy Commissioner's office) building at around 11 a.m. to gherao the office. They sat in dharna and raised slogans against the deputy commissioner and other officials for their Saturday's action when the enforcement staff of the Administration had removed angle-iron frames installed all over the courts for erecting makeshift chambers. These advocates also struck work for the day.
The protesters comprising mainly chamberless advocates, tried to force their way into the office several times, but were stopped at the gate by the policemen deployed in full strength. However, later they managed to enter the building through another gate and raised slogans in the corridors of the DC office.
With the gates having been locked up, the functioning at the Estate Office was badly affected. The protesters dispersed around 1.30 p.m. after an assurance by SDM P.S. Gill that District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bedi, DC R.K. Rao and Senior Superintendent of Police C.S.R. Reddy would discuss the issue on Tuesday. The advocates have threatened to gherao the office of Advisor to the UT administrator and violate section 144 tomorrow if the promised meeting doesn't take place.
One of the protesters Ashok Sehgal said that they were demanding a temporary arrangement till the administration arranged chambers for them. Chahal said they won't talk to the DC in his office and added that he should either come at the venue of dharna or in the district judge's office. He alleged that no notice was issued to them before the removal of the frames.
The protesters also overlooked SDM Gill's request to not to obstruct public entry into the Estate Office.
There are nearly 500 advocates and 400 of them do not have chambers. Around 50 makeshift chambers were being constructed and 15-odd already existed.
Deputy Commissioner Rao could not be contacted for his version despite repeated attempts.
