CHANDIGARH, Aug 24: The urban population in Punjab has increased from 27 per cent in 1991 to nearly 36 per cent. This was stated by N K Arora, the principal secretary in the local government department, while inaugurating a three-day orientation programme for women municipal councillor of Punjab at the Panjab University campus here today.He stated that women's participation in urban local bodies would result in stronger democracy. Welcoming the participants, Prof Pam Rajput, the director of the Centre for Women's Studies and Development stated that the programme was designed on the basis of training needs of the urban bodies.
Speaking on the occasion, Kamal Singh of the British Council gave examples of British women in politics. The programme is being jointly organised by the Centre for Women's Studies and Development, PU, Local Government Department, Punjab and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK and the British Council, British High Commission.
