CHANDIGARH, AUG 24: Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar will be the star attraction at the combined "Virasat" that the SPICMACAY intends to hold for Punjab and Chandigarh . The decision was taken at a convention of the chapters of the entire Northern region which was held at the Faculty Guest House in the Panjab University on Sunday.Addressing the delegates, numbering around 50, Kiran Seth, the founder-director of this organisation dedicated to the propagation of classical dance and music, stressed the need to strengthen the chapters of the Northern region, including the local one. The local chapter has been lying dormant for a considerably long period and they had not adhered to the usual agenda of programmes this year.
So, come September, they will wake up from their slumber with a lec-dem series wherein Odissi danseuse Kiran Saigal, Kuchipudi couple Jayram Vanishree Rao and Santoor player Bhajan Sapori will participate and perform.
In order to give an impetus to the organisation, it has been decided to constitute an advisory committee comprising bureaucrats, businessmen and artists so that fund mobilisation, the main problem faced by the SPICMACAY, will be eased. "Moreover, we have decided to give priority to schools for the sake of continuation of participation by the volunteers," pointed out Seth. The proposed "Mega Virasat" will be held in the last week of January next year when the SPICMACAY holds its regular Fest-series.
