NEW DELHI, August 24: The new `rental policy' of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) is slowly forcing sports organisers to either abandon their plans of organising tournaments or express their resentment and anguish at the exhorbitant tariff imposed by SAI for use of its facilities. The Delhi Swimming Association (DSA) took the lead last week against SAI's `stiff tariff' and sought the judicial assistance to conduct its state-level competitions at the Talkatora Pool. Then the Delhi Badminton Association called off its state championships as it could not afford the IGI Stadium rent.
Latest `victim' of SAI's rental policy is the All India Lala Bhim Sain Invitation Hockey Tournament, scheduled to be held at the National Stadium from August 29 to September 8. Organising secretary B S Khosla said in a press release here today that the tournament committee ``could not afford to pay the rental charges at the National Stadium which worked out at a minimum of Rs 2 lakh for the 10-day event.''
Khosla said the per day charges for a sponsored event worked out at Rs 10,000 (rental), Rs 1,000 (public address system), Rs 500 (per banner), Rs 500 (room charges, if required) and Rs 50,000 (refundable security). He said efforts to shift the tournament to Shivaji Stadium, the other venue for hockey in the Capital, failed as ``the astro-turf there is unfit and could result in serious injuries to players.'' The organisers have postpone the tournament. New dates will be announced later.
