BMC's `clean sweep' of Ganeshotsav
MUMBAI, August 25: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is pulling out all stops to ensure that this year's Ganeshotsav is a clean affair, announced Mayor Nandu Satam. At a press meet today, Satam said that all mandals in the city and suburbs have been instructed to keep their surroundings clean and ensure that the cleanliness drive is a success. ``Even flowers and other offerings should be collected for mass disposal,'' informed Satam.

Tempos supplied by the BMC and fitted with loudspeakers will move from place to place collecting nirmalya or decayed flowers and other offerings. On the day of immersion, a huge dumper will be placed on Girgaum Chowpatty for this purpose.

In the western suburbs as well, 11 tempos will be deployed and on immersion day, 27 tempos will be pressed into service. In the eastern suburbs, six tempos will initially be despatched and will later doubled for immersion day. Around 2,500 public mandals have been provided huge plastic bins to collect flowers and other offerings, informed Satam. These bins will be emptied into the tempos and taken to their respective collection sites. For the eastern and city suburbs, these offerings will be ferried to Somaiya College at Vidyavihar and Prateeksha Nagar at Sion where it will be stored for a while. It will later be taken to Worli and Everard Nagar for vermiculture and composting.
