MUMBAI, August 25: The Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM) has taken exception to the decision of the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to hike octroi duty rates on goods and commodities of daily use.The hike in octroi duty rates, which was decided without prior notice, ranges from 100 to 200 per cent on several items, stated Mohan Gurnani, president of the association, in a press release. Such a hike will severely affect trade and commerce as well hit common consumers, he added.
The business community is already reeling under recession and consumers have been severely affected by high inflation. The hike in octroi duty rates will further their woes, stated Gurnani.
