NHRC goaded for probe into Sitamarhi killings
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, August 29: Two social organisations, Nagrik Sewa Morcha and Swami Vivekananda Welfare Society, have urged the National Human Rights Commission to institute an inquiry into the recent police firing at Sitamarhi (Bihar), in which five persons were killed. In petitions filed yesterday at the NHRC, the two organisations pleaded for the Commission's intervention in the matter. ``On August 11, while the entire nation was preparing to celebrate the completion of India's 51st year of independence, the district administration of Sitamarhi and the Bihar government ordered firing on innocent people protesting against inadequate flood relief measures,'' the Nagrik Sewa Morcha said in its petition. It led, it said, to the killing of five people, including veteran Socialist leader and former MLA Ram Charitra Rai. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
