Councillors unhappy over appointments

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 1: Election of chairmen and vice-chairmen of 10 committees in the VMC on Tuesday has brewed discontent among a section of councillors, who have alleged that they were sidelined to please others.

The discontent, however, is unlikely to come out in the open as the councillors have silently accepted party's mandate. The committees were reconstituted few days ago after their one-year term ended.

In the list declared then in the General Board, the names of the chairmen and vice-chairmen were already stated, and today's announcement in respective meetings was just a formality.

According to sources, a councillor, who extended financial help to a senior BJP leader in the election, was elected chairman of one of the important committees. Former Lokshahi Morcha councillor Savitri Sharma, who switched over to the BJP during the last general election, was also rewarded by being appointed chairpersonship of the Recreational and Cultural Committee.

Few councillors have also questioned the appointment of Vidya Rajput as chairperson of the Estate Committee.

Lalita Oza, with RSS backing, was not included in the Standing Committee, but made the chairperson of the Health Committee. Jasoda Sonera continues as Drainage and Sewage Committee chair person.

Jitendra Parmar and Ramila Vasava of the same ward were made deputies in the Gas and Town Planning Committees respectively.

However, councillors have welcomed the appointment of Indravadan Modi as chairman of Public Works Committee, Pradip Joshi in Gas Committee and Arvind Patel, who replaces Ganibhai Qureshi, in the Electricity Committee. Qureshi was denied the chairmanship following his appointment as chairman of Waqf Board in Gujarat. Joshi had earlier served as chairman in the Gas Committee.
