SURAT, Sept 1: Oil merchants have divulged ludicrously low stocks of edible oil in response to District Collector R M Shah's directive seeking to know how much they had in stock in view of the prevailing shortage.If the traders are to be believed, there is only enough stock to last about two weeks. Chhagan Narottam's company, one of the biggest, claimed to possess only 257 tins (15 kg) of groundnut oil; 21 tins of five kg each; 37 tins of cottonseed oil; and 46 tins of palmolein oil.
Raunak Mill, an equally big party, declared only 46 tins while Rajhans Oil told the collectorate that it had 1844 kg of groundnut oil, 656 tins of cottonseed oil and 384 of palmolein oil.
Only traders of Chowkbazaar, Rander, Nanpura and Varachha registered their stocks when the officers of district supplies department undertook stocktaking on a zonal basis.
Of the 51 traders who had registered their stocks till last evening, Jigar Traders declared stock of 14,167 kg of oil seed and 5720 kg of groundnut.
Among the other traders declaring their stocks were Saurashtra Sugar (230 ground nut oil tins and 524 cottonseed oil tins); Ambika Sugar (764 groundnut oil tins and 147 cottonseed oil tins); Punam Traders (382 groundnut oil tins); Bharat Traders (266 groundnut oil tins); Khodiar Sales (146 groundnut oil tins); Gurukrupa Trading (384 groundnut oil tins, 163 cottonseed oil tins) and Vishwas Agency (39 groundnut oil and 288 cottonseed oil tins).
The district collector is away in Gandhinagar, where he was attending a high level meeting.
