Rosset narrowly escapes air crash

AGENCIES
GENEVA, Sept 3: Swiss tennis champion Marc Rosset escaped death after deciding at the last minute not to take Swissair flight 111 which crashed near Canada killing 229 people onboard, sports sources said today.

The 1992 Olympic champion Rosset, a native Genevese, was defeated in the first round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Grandstand in New York by Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty.

According to sources, he had booked a seat on the Geneva-bound Swissair flight which tumbled into the Atlantic Ocean off Nova Scotia after leaving New York Wednesday night, killing all 215 passengers and 14 crew on board.

Swissair confirmed that Rosset was not on the passenger list, but did not specify whether he had booked a seat on the flight.
