Matthew M Fernandes, branch manager, The Indian Express, Loksatta and The Financial Express, Goa, retired from service on August 31 after 40 years of service. Fernandes began his career as a telex operator cum stenographer in 1958. He has worked in the Express offices of Mumbai, Calcutta and Pune. Under Fernandes, Express was the first national newspaper to open an office in Goa after its liberation in 1961. Another employee, Philomena V Fernandes, a clerk with the Goa office also retired on the same day. She began service as a teleprinter operator cum clerk at the Goa office 23 years ago.

Proposal for supermarket

The Bombay Hawkers Association has proposed an underground supermarket at Bhatia Baug, opposite CST railway station, on the lines of the super market constructed by New Delhi Municipal Corporation. The suggestions have been made considering the BMC's difficulties in accommodating hawkers.
