Fair price shops to begin retailing of palmolein oil

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 3: To tide over the edible oil scarcity after the adulterated mustard oil scare in the city, palmolein oil will be made available at all fair price shops (FPS) within ten days.

The government will receive an additional supply of 25,000 metric tonnes of palmolein oil per month from the Central Government for this purpose. This is apart from the oil which has been imported and is being packaged here in Delhi.

Announcing this at a press conference the Delhi Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, Purnima Sethi, said: ``Palmolein oil will be made available at 3,500 FPS all over Delhi at Rs 37 per litre.'' The Delhi Government had earlier announced that palmolein oil, meant for that section of the society which has been the worst hit by the mustard oil adulteration, will be made available by August 1. ``We are making available Palmolein oil for public consumption through the public distribution system in sufficient quantity so that the traders don't hold people to ransom.''

The Palmolein oil will be available in 1 kg and 5 kg packings from the middle of this month. ``With this there will be no scarcity of edible oil for the consumers in Delhi,'' the minister stressed. She also informed that the Delhi Government is planning to streamline the administration in the Food and Civil Supplies Department. For this, 11 circle officers have already been located within the jurisdiction of the concerned circle. Seven circles are also being relocated and action will be complete soon.

Waking up to the crisis rather late in the day, the minister said she is determined to enforce the supplies law strictly. Orders for regular checking of the FPSs and others covered under the various control schemes are being issued.

``The department conducted joint inspection with the PFA and began the prosecution process against 27 dealers,'' she said.

The minister announced that all ration card holders of Delhi will be entitled to receive 500 gms of additional sugar per card as festival quota. It will supplied to consumers through FPS either this month or the next.
