Indian duo overcomes South American challenge
Fourth-seeded Indian pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi defeated Fernando Meligeni of Brazil and Mariano Puerta of Argentina 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in the men's doubles first-round match of the US Open tennis tournament yesterday. The Indian pair had lost in the semifinals last year.

Windies `A' itinerary not yet finalised
The itinerary of the West Indies `A' team's forthcoming month-long tour of India in Nov-Dec is not yet finalised, according to the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jaywant Lele.

Step backward: Kalmadi
Suresh Kalmadi, chief of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), described the cricket team for the Commonwealth Games as a "step backwards". Though he refused to say whether or not the IOA was happy with the list of players forwarded to it by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he made his point loud and clear when he said that "the BCCI has managed to put up two best teams."
