Strengthen roots of parliamentary democracy: Sonia
Congress president Sonia Gandhi yesterday said the party would resist any move to tamper with the parliamentary form of Government in the name of stability and there was nothing permanent about uncertain mandates and coalitions. She said the party should take a lead in championing the cause of electoral reforms that would put parliamentary form of Government on a sounder foundation.

Clinton says sorry to stem party revolt
With growing disaffection in the party, desertion by prominent allies and friends, and possible censure by the Legislature, President Bill Clinton invoked the word "sorry'' for the first time as he apologised abjectly for his affair with a former White House intern.

SA regrets Mandela's Kashmir remark
South Africa apologised for the reference to Kashmir in President Nelson Mandela's speech at the start of the NAM summit. South Africa's Deputy President Thabo Mbeki and his wife went up to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at the NAM plenary session on Thursday and personally apologised for the Kashmir mention.

RBI for quick remedies to halt slowdown
With the dark clouds of the general slowdown and the South-east Asian crisis looming large over the economic horizon, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has listed four areas -- downturn in industrial output, rising inflation, widening fiscal deficit and slowdown in export growth -- that need to be addressed quickly by "forward-looking monetary and fiscal policies.''
