Brazil revamps soccer team after Cup loss
RIO DE JANEIRO
: Brazil has a brand new soccer team, and Ronaldo isn't on it at least yet. New coach Wanderley Luxemburgo unveiled a roster today that had little in common with the Brazilian World Cup team. Most of the 22 players have never played on the national team before.

Their first test will be against Yugoslavia on Sept 23, in the northeastern city of Sao Luis. Only four players are back from the team that lost the World Cup final 3-0 to France last July 12. The returnees are Denilson, Rivaldo, Cafu and Emerson.

Ronaldo of Inter Milan wasn't called because he's out of shape after vacation in Brazil. But Luxemburgo says he plans to call the two-time Fifa player of the year in the future. Defenders Roberto Carlos and Junior Baiano also may get another chance. But Luxemburgo is looking for younger players to replace veterans Taffarel, Aldair, Dunga, Cesar Sampaio and Bebeto.

The team: Goalkeepers: Andre (Internacional), Rogerio (SaoPaulo)Defenders: Cafu (Roma), Felipe (Vasco), Serginho (Sao Paulo), Cris (Corinthians), Antonio Carlos (Roma), Cleber (Palmeiras), Odvan (Vasco)Midfielders: Alexandre (Sao Paulo), Alex (Palmeiras), Rogerio (Palmeiras), Vampeta (Corinthians), Pedrinho (Vasco), Emerson (Bayer Leverkusen), Marcos Assumpcao (Flamengo)

Forwards: Muller (Cruzeiro), Fabio Junior (Cruzeiro), Cristian (Internacional), Marcelinho (Corinthians), Denilson (Betis), Rivaldo (Barcelona).

Athletes panned
MOSCOW:
World athletics chief Primo Nebiolo has accused a group of sprinters of cowardice for refusing to attend today's Grand Prix final here. American world 100 metres champion Maurice Greene, his training partner Jon Drummond and Trinidad's world 200 metres gold medallist Ato Boldon have pulled out of the meeting.

Drummond was the prime mover in a petition to the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) calling on the world governing body to change the venue because of the present economic and politicalcrisis in Russia. The IAAF dismissed the request and Nebiolo was openly contemptuous at a news conference yesterday.

Bruin files appeal
LAUSANNE:
Triple Olympic gold medallist Michelle Smith-de Bruin has filed an appeal against her four-year suspension by swimming's governing body (FINA), the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has said. The Irish swimmer has until September tomorrow to submit an appeal with the Lausanne-based court after FINA found her guilty of tampering with a urine sample taken to test for drugs.

Smith-de Bruin has consistently denied interfering with the sample and has said she would seek damages.
