MUMBAI, Sept 5: There were upsets galore in the Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank Maharashtra State Ranking table tennis tournament at the Mavli Mandal Hall, Thane, today.The second and third seeds in the men's section, Rohit Choudhary and Nachiket Chawathe, are out. So are the girls top seed Shalmali Inamdar and the women's third seed Shalmali Mhatre.
Choudhary was knocked out by 19-year-old second-year student of MMK College George Joseph in the pre-quarters 16-21, 21-17, 21-17, 17-21, 20-22. George then went on to defeat Jayant Udeshi of IDBI in the quarter-finals 13-21, 21-18, 21-14, 21-18.
Thirteenth seed Sanjeev Mehra knocked out Chawathe, again in five games. Chawathe lost 21-14, 21-16, 10-21, 20-22, 15-21. Chawathe had two match points in the fourth game when leading 20-19 and later 21-20. But Mehra saved them and went on to win the match.
Shalmali Inamdar defeated Shalmali Mhatre 21-19, 14-21, 21-12, 21-19 but, seeded one in the girls section, lost to Manasi Shevde of Pune 17-21,21-12, 21-18, 17-21, 17-21 in the pre-quarter-finals.
