Breakthrough achieved in spirulina production

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, Sept 5: The National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) and the New Ambadi Estates have jointly launched a new health food Spirulina Algae under the brand name Multinal.

The know-how for the production of Spitulina Algae was developed by scientists of the Chennai-based AMM Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre (MCRC). The team was led by the late C V Seshadri with financil assistance from NRDC and the technology was later licensed by the NRDC to New Ambadi Estates.

Spirulina is the only single natural source which can provide the highest amount of protein (71 per cent) compared to other protein-yielding foods. At the same time, it provides essential and non-essential amino acids, a wide variety of natural vitamins including the `B' complex range, minerals, and Beta Carotene, which is a precursor of Vitamin A.

It is the only vegetable source of Vitamin B 12 and contains three times higher protein as compared to soyabean and five times that of meat. It contains two and half times more vitaminB 12 than liver extract which has been known as a natural vitamin B 12 source since times immemorial.

Apart from being a health food, Spirulina has numerous medical applications. Since it contains Beta Carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A, feeding children one or two grams a day prevents night blindness. Also, it has prophylactic properties against cancer.

Spiriluna is also used in pisiculture, sericulture and in cosmetic preparations particularly in facial creams and shampoos. Since the strain used in this bio-technology product has been recognised as one of the best in the world, it has immense export potential.
