Shiv Prakash sparkles in play-off

Express News Service
Bangalore, September 5: Shiv Prakash was champion by the proverbial whisker as the Wills Southern India golf championship came roaring to life on the final day.

It was a dream finish as both Prakash and Basad Ali finished with an identical five-under 240 after 62 holes of play. The play-off had to be resorted to and Prakash, the SRF Open champion in New Delhi earlier this year, came up with a birdie in the first hole to break the deadlock and take home a cheque for Rs 99,960.

Ali, who looked a spent force after that incredible showing on the second day, had to be content with the runner-up spot and a cheque for Rs 66,660.Birdies on the fourth and 12th holes left him at the top of the heap. It was a brave showing by Prakash, for till then it was Indian Open champion Feroz Ali who was calling the shots.

Feroz Ali, with birdies on the second, third and fifth holes took the lead, but then his putting went awry and he made mistakes galore to yield center stage to Prakash and Ali.

Ali, who missed a 12-footbirdie on the first hole, could have won the title on the 18th hole if he had come up with a 6-feet birdie putt.

The pressure of the tourney was clearly too much for this veteran who muffed on that putt and took the championship into the play-off round.

Gaurav Ghei came up with his trade mark strong finish to shoot a five-under 67, but it was good enough only to fetch him a joint third place with Feroz Ali.

Rahul Ganapathy won the amateur section with an aggregate of 252. he finished the final day with a six over 78.
