NEW DELHI, Sept 7: Two vigilance officers posted at the Indira Gandhi airport were arrested by the Palam police for extorting money from three persons returning from Dubai by Gulf Air. Abu Saleh, Mohd Razid and Shahlaws Ahmed arrived at the IGI arport last morning. A person in plainclothes reportedly approached them and demanded cash amounting to Rs 1000 for custom clearance. However, the trio refused and went to the customs counter.The man at the custom counter took cash amounting to 300 Drihum in Dubai currency from Abu Salah, Rs 400 from Mohd Razid and 90 Drihum and 36 dollars from Shahlaws for custom clearance. A Toshiba colour television was also missing from their trolley. The trio then went back home in the Jama Masjid area. Police officers believe that the trio were apprehensive about reporting the matter as the plainclothesman were vigilance officers themselves.
The trio registered a complaint at the Palam police station this morning. Two vigilance officers, Ram Vir Singh and Shyam Lal, were arrested this afternoon. A case was registered under sections 384 and 407 of the Indian Penal Code.
In a separate case, a driver of a courtey coach was arrested for extorting money from a foreign national. The coach carries passengers from the domestic to the international airport. The 8-kilometer journey is free.
However, driver Rajinder extorted money from a foreign national who later regsitered a complaint with the airport authorities. Rajinder was arrested this afternoon under charges of touting.
