GANDHINAGAR, Sept 7: Sports Authority of India Secretary Amrit Mathur arrived on a day's visit to Gandhinagar to probe the charges of ``nepotism and high-handedness'' against SAI director (west zone centre) P C Kashyap. This follow a written and an oral representation by the State Government to Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Uma Bharati and the latter's directive to Mathur to visit the SAI complex here.
As soon as he arrived from Delhi this morning, Mathur met employees and union leaders at the SAI complex and received representations from them against Kashyap's ``autocratic style of functioning''. He also inspected thoroughly the facilities being provided to sportspersons and employees here.
Before he left for Delhi late in the evening, Mathur called on Minister of State for Sports Mahendra Trivedi, who had made a written and an oral representations to Bharati, at the latter's chamber at the Secretariate. Trivedi gave him a detailed account of how Kashyap ``is hell bent to ruin sports activities in Gujarat'' and reiterated his demand for kashyap's immediate transfer.
Trivedi also made it clear to Mathur that the Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) was keen to take over the SAI complex for which the SAG had already prepared a detailed proposal to be sent to the Union Sports Ministry after consultations with Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel.
He complained that Kashyap had made a mess of the complex and dealt a severe blow to sports activities by discontinuing some important schemes, including neighbourhood community sports centres, grant for coaching camps for junior players and promotion of indegenous sports and martial arts.
He also drew Mathur's attention to SPDA centres at Patan, Rajkot and Devgadh Baria having been closed and the diploma courses run at Gandhinagar SAI complex suspended. Kashyap had been victimising senior and upright SAI officials and had not spared even class IV Gujarati employees at the SAI complex, transferring some to other west zone centres such as Rajasthan and Goa, Trivedi told Mathur.
During the course of discussion, Trivedi received a phone call from the Union Sports Minister's private secretary Vinay Kumar inquiring if Mathur had met him (Trivedi). ``Mathur is sitting right in front of me and I have told him to ensure Kashyap's transfer and take strict discplinary against him at the earliest in the larger interests of sports development in Gujarat'', he said.
When Mathur tried to be aplogetic about the SAI complex affairs, Trivedi aked him: ``Are you aware of the fact that Kashyap has commercialised the SAI facilities, renting out hostels rooms and guest house to private parties. Do you know sports facilities are in a bad shape at the SAI complex?''. In no uncertain terms, he said: ``This man (Kashyap) is just a misfit to hold such a vital post of the west zone director and must be shunted out immediately''.
Showing a newspaper clipping to Mathur, the Minister pointed out how SAI's chief vigilance officer in Delhi had indicted Kashyap for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities, dereliction of duty and abuse of office when he was the director, stadia administration, at Talkatora Swimming Pool stadium in Delhi. ``Would you still want to keep such a person in Gandhinagar?'', Trivedi asked Mathur.
