SURAT, Sept 8: The South Gujarat Medical Education Trust has decided to establish a private medical college at an estimated cost of Rs 29 crore. The self-financed college is proposed to start functioning from June 1999.A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting, held at the Circuit House on Tuesday, presided over by Minister of Textiles Kashram Rana.
Former mayor Fakirbhai Chauhan, a permanent member of the Education Trust, told reporters that the proposed medical college will have 50 per cent seats reserved for meritorious students, while 50 per cent will be filled by way of donation (10 per cent seats, reserved for Non-Resident Indians, is included in the donation category).
Initially classes will be held either in the Old Civil Hospital or the ESI hospital. The Trust will also hold talks with South Gujarat University authorities to explore the possibility whether the college could be set up on the vast SGU campus.
Though the Trust is yet to hold talks with donors, Chauhan expressed confidence that they would not be able to mobilise Rs 29 crore for the purpose and also secure permission to start the college.
Claiming that a number of doctors had agreed to render honourary services, Chauhan said a panel of professors had also been formed.
Among others, Dilip Marfatia, Dr K K Khanna, Mayor Savitaben Sharda, District Collector R M Shah, South Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor professor Rohit Shelat, Medical College's Dean Geetaben Aggrawal attended the meeting.
