Vijay Goel gets anticipatory bail in rioting case

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, Sept 8: Chandni Chowk BJP MP Vijay Goel was granted anticipatory bail by Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) S.K. Gupta in connection with a rioting case in 1996. He furnished a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety of the same amount.

On August 27 the MM had issued Goel summons for September 9, on the charge damaging lottery ticket stalls in Roop Nagar.

A First Information Report (no. 271/ 96) was filed on the basis of a complaint made by stall-owner Rajendra Yadav. While Yadav named Vijay Goel and his associates in the complaint, a charge-sheet was filed only against Gautam Goel, a Roop Nagar resident, and Vikas Sethi from Darawala Nagar under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50 and upwards) of the Indian Penal Code.

However on August 27 the MM said: ``It is clear from the entire evidence placed on the file at this stage that there is sufficient material on the record to proceed against the accused Pawan Nagpal and Vijay Goel and place them on trial.''

According to Yadav, who sells lottery tickets at plot no. 4 of Rajendra Vardhaman Tower in Roop Nagar, Vijay Goel along with 15 to 20 of his men came to the area on the morning of August 18, 1996, and went on a rampage. They allegedly threw tickets, damaged counters and beat up lottery-ticket sellers.
