September 9: St Stanislaus won the Under-14 Division I title with a 3-0 win over St Francis D'Assisi in the tie-breaker of the Inter-Schools football championship, sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive, at the Mumbai Schools Sports Association Ground, Azad Maidan today.Earlier, St Mary's SSC beat Our Lady School, Dadar 1-0 for the third spot.
St Stanislaus, who have already won the under-16 Division I title, just capped a successful season while their unlucky counterparts from Borivli lost the Ahmed Sailor Cup final yesterday.
Ishaq Kazi, D'Assisi goalkeeper, foiled some snap shots taken by St Stanislaus' diminutive striker Kyle Mascarenhas while the lanky Johann Periera's runs through the centre failed to get any result.
After the breather, John Alphonso, D'Assisi coach, instructed the boys to attack more. And D'Assisi did just that. Tiny winger Gurunath Iyer was able to get through the Stanislaus defence twice but failed to guide his shot. Later, he suffered an injury and was forced to sit out.
In the tie-breaker, all the three spotkicks taken by Jonathan Fernandes, Vikram Noronha and Yohann Pereira were converted for Stanislaus.
Cyril Gabriel, Stanislaus coach, was pleased with the win and commented that they deserved to win in the regulation time while his counterpart John Alphonso complimented his opponents. And during the prize distribution, Stanislaus boys exhibited true sportsmanship with a gifted each to the losers.
