Inspector held accepting bribe

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, SEPT 10: Inspector Sharadchandra Nemade (51), attached to Bhoiwada police station, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday for allegedly demanding a bribe from a businessman.

ACB officials said Nemade had demanded a sum of Rs 10,000 from businessman Vicky Manjeet Singh Sethi, who runs a video parlour at Naigaum Cross Road, Dadar, and was caught red-handed accepting a sum of Rs 5,000.

According to the complaint lodged by Sethi, his father is owner of Karishma Restaurant and Bar at Naigaum Cross Road, and he runs the Karishma video parlour next to the restaurant. Sethi had obtained the requisite licenses and permission for running the parlour and had even obtained a stay from Bombay High Court restraining police from taking any action against his business.

On September 6, 1998, Nemade approached Sethi and demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 per month to allow the latter to run his business. Sethi showed Nemade the licenses and other documents permitting him to run the parlour, alongwith the HC order. But Nemade insisted on a bribe of Rs 10,000.

The inspector then agreed to accept the money in instalments of Rs 5,000 each and told Sethi he would be visiting his parlour on September 8 to collect the first instalment. Sethi then approached ACB, which laid a trap near the parlour in the presence of independent witnesses.

At around 9.00 pm, Nemade arrived and demanded the money from Sethi. As Sethi gave him the cash, ACB sleuths nabbed Nemade and took him into custody.

Nemade was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate N B Pokharkar at Esplanade Court and has been remanded to police custody up to September 14, 1998.
