MUMBAI, Sept 10: Stephie Sequeira (nee D'Souza) a prominent sports personality in the field of hockey and athletics and an Arjuna awardee died yesterday in Jamshedpur after a prolonged illness at the age of 62.Stephie, in her heydays, was one of the India's ace athletes who had to her credit national records in 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m. She was the only women athlete to be selected for the 1964 Olympics at Tokyo. And had created a Asian record in 200m run. She also had won the silver medal in 1958 Asian Games at Tokyo.
Six years after winning the silver medal, Stephie was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1964.
In the field of hockey, Stephie captained the Indian women's hockey team and toured Japan and England twice and also had a chance to play in Germany, Holland, Iran and Philippines as a member of the squad.
Later she was also nominated to the most important sports body in the country -- All India Council of Sports, which included personalities like Mansoor Ali Khan (Nawab of Pataudi), DhyanChand and Ramanthan Krishnan.
Stephie did her schooling at the Sardar Dastur Girls School at Pune and later graduated from the Fergusson College. An employee of the Central Railways (Pune Division), she shifted to Jamshedpur after her marriage.
