Leann stuns top-seed Yogita

MUMBAI, September 10: Leann Almeida of Mary Immaculate caused a major upset in the MSSA Colgate Palmolive Inter-Schools Chess Tournament when she defeated defending champion and top seed Yogita Yevle of Parle Tilak in the third round. She won her fourth round match to share the lead with four others -- Priyanka Vora, Niharika Thakkar, Michelle Fizardo and Swarali Thipsay.

Yogita, who had participated in the Asian Sub-junior championships at Parle last year, blundered a full knight in equal position to hand the game to Leann who converted the advantage to win.

After four rounds in the under-14 boys section, two players, Niral Sanghvi (St. Josephs) and Akash Khalwadekar (St. Stanislaus) are jointly leading the field of 70 players with two points each.

Top seed Aditya Vora of Don Bosco was forced to a draw by Ali Khan of Cathedral and John Connon. Ali is in the second position with Varun Dattani, Kabir Malhotra and Aditya Vora.

Senior Division Chess

The Senior Division Chess Tournament, conducted by Mumbai Chess Association will be held at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen, Sayani Road from September 14. It will be played on a nine-round Swiss League basis and 32 players from the senior division will be promoted to Mumbai Division. Entry fee is Rs 70 and the last date for submitting it is September 11.

Lajpatrai down Bhavan

Sanjay Pathak's brace for Lajpatrai College helped them todrub Bhavan's College in the Inter-Collegiate Football Tournament played at the University ground today.

In another match, Anthony Fernandes scored four in St Andrew's 9-2 win over Raheja College. Sanjay Fernandes had a brace while Arveen Thakur, Allen Fernandes and Jude Fernandes scored a goal apiece.

Jai Ambe defeated Larsen and Toubro 1-0 in the Mumbai District Football Association Division I match at the St Xavier's Ground, Parel today. Suresh Shankar scored the only goal.

Jai Hind, Don Bosco top

Don Bosco, Matunga and Jai Hind won the under-17 and under-19 team titles in the District Sports Council Multi Games Inter-Schools Table Tennis championships at the Don Bosco School, matunga here today.

Don Bosco defeated Bharatiya Vidyamandir, Dadar 3-2 while Jai Hind also triumphed by the same 3-2 margin over KC
