CHANDIGARH, Sept 10: Formidable combination of international Chanderdeep and Munish Arora Navdeep helped Patiala win the men's team championship in the Frontier Inter-District Badminton Championship at Phagwara. Patiala made it a memorable double by beating Jalandhar 2-0 in the women's team championship final.Vijaydeep gave Patiala the flying start by beating Ranjit Singh of Jalandhar 15-5, 15-5. However, Jalandhar restored parity after Rohan Kapoor beat Chanderdeep of Patiala 15-8, 15-1. Vijaydeep and Navdeep then defeated Kamaljit and Gagandeep of Jalandhar 15-8, 15-6. Jalandhar against equalised through Jaideep who outpointed Navdeep 15-11, 15-9.
In the deciding doubles, Munish Arora and Chanderdeep beat Ram Lakhan and Neeraj Bansal 15-13, 15-10.
In the women's section, Meeta Bhadur of Patiala beat Sapna Ratti 11-9, 11-8 in the first singles and later Meeta and Yogita Sharma outplayed Sampna and Sheel Bhagat 15-12, 15-12 in the doubles to win the crown.
Cash awards
The Punjab Gymnastic Association has decided to give cash awards to the first three best gymnasts in the state championship. Disclosing this here today, PGA president Sudhir Mittal said that a cash incentive of Rs 5,000 would be given to the best gymnast to be adjudged in the Punjab Junior Championship to be held in Ludhiana in November.
The second and third best gymnasts would be entitled to cheques of Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively. This will be applicable in all future championships.
The PGA president also announced cash awards of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 for the three best gymnastic coaches. This award will be paid during the Punjab State Senior Championship to be held in Gurdaspur in January next year.
Sunita shines
International Sunita Dahiya of Hindu Girls College, Sonipat emerged the fastest runner by winning 100 metres in 12.96 second in the 12th Haryana State Women Sports Festival in Gurgaon.
Baljeet Kaur of Yamunangar and Chaman Deep of Rohtak finished second and third with 13.17 and 14.10 seconds respectively.
Ambala girl Mamlesh clocked 13.74 seconds in 100 metres to become the fastest runner among girls under-16. Sunil of Jhajjar and Sangeeta of Rohtak were second and third respectively.
Two records were re-written in the athletic competitions. Babita of Sonipat threw the javelin to 35.92 metres surpassing the old mark of 31.76 metres which was standing in the name of Kailash of Rohtak. Seema Antil of Sonipat established a new meet record in shot put for girls under-16. She putted 10.27 metres against the old record of 9.72 metres.
COA elections
Elections of the new office-bearers of the Chandigarh Olympic Association would be held on Setpember 21 at 6.30 p.m. at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association Complex in Sector 10. This was decided in the executive committee meeting held yesterday under the chairmanship of president Rajan Kashyap.
