CHANDIGARH, Sept 10: Three S A S Nagar athletes did the Mohali Coaching Centre proud by winning laurels in the just concluded Rath Indian Open marathon held in Delhi. Sharda Chandel bagged the first place in the women's section clocking 3 hr 16 min to pocket a cash award of Rs 50,000 while Jatinder Singh got gold medal in the veteran category with a timing of 1::30:45. He got Rs 3,000.Another athlete, Sarbjeet Kaur came third in the half marathon (21 km) in the women's group. She clocked 1::36.00, and won Rs 2,000.
In an informal meeting held today at the MCC, the members of Mohali Sports Club and athletes of the MCC lauded the efforts of the three athletes and their coach Swaran Singh.
Sharda had also won third place in the 1,500 metres race in a sports meet held recently at Kerala. Her efforts fetched her a cash award of Rs 10,000.
In her maiden attempt in the marathon race, she outduelled seasoned runners like Sunita Godara and V Satyabama, to emerge victorious.
Athletes of the MCC have been making waves at the national circuit for the past some time. Recently, Jasmine got second place in the 10 km walk event in the women's section in the Federation Cup held at Chennai while Pawan Kumar (javelin) has been selected for the junior national camp.
