SURAT, Sept 10: A delegation of social workers of the city, while condemning the ``chaos and the pathetic manner'' in which the just concluded Ganeshotsava was held, met the district collector and the police commissioner and requested them to intervene and preserve the sanctity of the forthcoming Navratri festival. The delegation -- led by Nakul Thakkar, Jitu Daalia and Mahesh Icecreamwala -- met Police Commissioner Maniram and District Collector R M Shah separately on Thursday and submitted a memorandum to them, alleging that like the Ganeshotsava, people were out to convert the sacred Navratri festival too into a business.
``These organisers charged tickets worth Rs 1,500 to 2,500 from the people for nine days,'' alleged Thakkar, while requesting Maniram to check the menace, which according to the delegation, was increasing by the day.
Claiming that the city had to face a ``disastrous impact'' because of the large number and huge sizes of idols, the delegation stated that people were practically in tears a day after the immersion, when many idols started floating in the Tapi river.
If the police commissionerate and the collectorate had checked the size and number of the idols installed, this would not happened, they added.
While highlighting the various problems connected with Navratri, Thakkar told Express Newsline that every year, some new club joined the fray and to earn big profits. ``When the statue of Amba Mata is installed in the place, it should not be used for business,'' he said.
Later, Maniram, while confirming that the delegation had submitted a memorandum to him, stated that the police would do something in the matter. Though he did not list out any specific steps, he said that the problem would be discussed at a meeting of police officials to be called next week.
Officials, whom the delegation met, however agreed that in the past few years, the tickets for watching or participating in garba had gone up considerably and there was a need to put some sort of administrative controls on it.
