VADODARA, Sept 14: The Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) has severed electricity connections of 17 hotels on the Vadodara-Surat highway allegedly indulging in power-theft.According to an official spokesman, this is first incident where action has been taken against so many highway hotels. The irregularities were detected in surprise raids carried out by the GEB in 35 of the 85 hotels checked. Bills totalling up to Rs 16.25 lakh have been slapped on those indulging in power-theft.
Similarly, power-pilferers in GIDC Ankleshwar Estate have been asked to pay fine of over Rs 9 lakh. Irregularities were detected in 20 out of the 61 cases checked.
Meanwhile, in the last week of August, the Board detected power-theft to the tune of Rs 35.40 lakh.
Out of the 7,326 cases checked in different parts of the State, irregularities were detected in 859 cases. Agricultural, industrial and lighting connections were checked and the defaulters have been served the bills.
At a meeting of high-level officers, excess demurrage which is being given on loading and unloading of coal was also reviewed. Board chairman Nalin Bhatt reviewed the inflow of coal in the last fortnight. Board Member (Administration) S K Nanda asked the department to take action against contractors and if necessary also officers in connection of the demurrage.
