Union Academy crash out

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 14: Delhi's Union Academy crashed out of the Mohan Singh Hockey tournament as they failed to make the quarter-final league when they went down 2-3 to Government Higher Secondary School (Kila Raipur) in the boys section at the Shivaji Stadium here today.

Two other outstation teams, N.D. Victor School from Jalandhar and SHSM (Sirsa) qualified for the quarter-final league. In their crucial league match today, the boys from Jalandhar routed SS Mota Singh School (Janakpuri) for a 7-0 margin. In another match, SHSM defeated Queen Convent (Lucknow) 5-0 in the quarter-final league.

The Union Academy boys played their heart out and kept their rivals on tenterhooks for most part of the game. But the Kila Raipur schoolboys proved too hot for them, particularly when they mounted pressure on their Delhi opponents, despite being down 0-2 at one stage. The Delhi boys also played rough and invited the wrath of referees, resulting in five of their boys being booked.

Academy took the lead in the 12th minute when Rajinder Singh slammed in from close range. Within two minutes of that goal, Rajinder was at it once again as he put Academy in a sound position with another crisp shot. But after that they slackened a bit and the Kila Raipur boys seized the opportunity to bang in twice before the break to restore parity. Satwinder Singh accounted for their opening goal and captain Raminder Singh converted a penalty corner.

On resumption, however, the Academy boys were a little sluggish and none seemed going for an attack. In the 58th minute Kila Raipur school were awarded a penalty stroke with which Gurmit Singh made no mistake.

The Jalandhar boys, in contrast, played a sedate game against a weak opponent like SS Mota Singh School and yet managed to score at will. Parminderpal Singh and Satwinder Singh were the stars of Victor School with three goals each while Gurinder Singh chipped in with one.

In another game, Lucknow convent were too superior7 to the Sirsa. After leading 3-0, the former came back after the interval and struck twice to complete the rout. The goalscorers for Lucknow were Mohd Ajam (2), Nafees Ahmed, Ajay Thapa and Vinod Singh.
