Aaquib, Zahid put Pak one up

Ashish Shukla

TORONTO, SEPT 17: Poor batting by India in the wake of some good bowling gave Pakistan a comprehensive 77-run victory and a 2-1 lead in the five-match Sahara Cup cricket series here yesterday.

Indian batsmen slumped to 180 all out in 46.2 overs, on a pitch on which their counterparts thrived under bowler-friendly conditions to make 257 for five off their allotted 50 overs.

Javagal Srinath was the top-scorer for India with a quick-fire 43, studded with two fours and three sixes. Nayan Mongia (38) and Saurav Ganguly (23) made the other significant contributions to the Indian score as rest of the Indian batsmen failed to tackle the Pakistani attack.

For Pakistan, Aaquib Javed, who took the crucial wickets of Navjot Singh Sidhu and skipper Mohammed Azharuddin in quick succession, finished with two for 22 off seven overs while rookie pacer Mohammed Zahid scalped two wickets for 20 runs, before returning to the pavilion owing to a toe injury.

Ganguly looked in good touch and raised 43-run opening stand withSidhu before he made the fatal mistake.

The left-hander dashed down the track for a non-existent run after Sidhu had pushed the ball to short midwicket and was caught short by Saqlain Mushtaq, who swooped on the ball and threw down the stumps with a direct hit.

India lost two quick wickets as both Sidhu (15) and Azharuddin (1) were trapped leg before wicket by Javed to slump to a precarious 46 for three from where they never recovered.

Earlier, Pakistan rode on a fine performance by its top order led by man-of-the-match Inzamam-ul-Haq (81) and Saeed Anwar (58) to reach 257 for five in their innings.
