Jitender assures India of bronze

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
KUALA LUMPUR, SEPT 17: Jitender Kumar, the lone Indian boxer in contention at the Commonwealth Games, today fought to a plan and outpointed Kenyan George Adipo in the middleweight category to assure India a bronze from the rings.

With medal hope Dingko Singh going out in the second round of bantamweight, Gurmit Singh outclassed in his opening featherweight round, and Gurcharan Singh also eliminated in the light-heavyweight after a tough fight in the second round, all hopes were pinned on Jitender who did not disappoint.

Kumar's semifinal opponent will be Trevor Stewardson of Canada who edged out Scotland's Alan Foster 20-19 in another good contest.

Kumar began cautiously, sizing down his opponent before going on the attack. He had a good defence and better reach than the Kenyan.

He built up a good lead by the fourth round and won 29-15. Kumar had beaten Francis Partsoh of Samoa very easily on Monday.

At the last games in Victoria too, India had a lone bronze to bring back which was won by BirjuShah.

Dingko Singh was projected as a potential medal winner prior to the Games but after beating Alfred Tetteh of Ghana in the first round, Dingko met his match against Abdu Tebezalwa of Uganda on Sunday.

Gurmit Singh lost to Australian James Swan while Gurcharan Singh after beating Enroy Tony of St Vincent fell to Troy Amos Ross of Canada.
