Three Indians left in fray in singles

KUALA LUMPUR, SEPT 17: Pullela Gopi Chand stormed into the pre-quarterfinals as Nikhil Kanetkar and Aparna Popat were the only other Indians left in the singles of the Commonwealth Games badminton competition here today.

While Abhinn Shyam Gupta fell to second seed and world number eight Yong Hock Kin of Malaysia, among the women P V V Lakshmi, Manjusha Kanwar and Neelima Chaudhary fell by the wayside.

Lakshmi lost in the morning to Woon Sze Mei of Malaysia 11-8, 11-1, 11-3 in the second round and Manjusha and Neelima, after moving into the third round, lost to superior opponents in the evening session.

Aparna Popat, stayed on course for a medal with an 11-4, 11-8 victory over Rebecca Pantaney of England and after the elimination of Li Feng, who was upset by Mee Fen Ng of Malaysia 4-11, 3-11, had improved her chances.

Neelima, after a 6-11, 11-6, 11-1 win over Elizabeth Cann of Jersey, went down tamely to top seed and world number 10 Kelly Morgan of Wales. Manjusha fell victim to another seeded playerJulia Mann, England's number one player, 11-4, 3-11, 3-11.

In men's doubles, Markose Bristow/George Thomas entered the pre-quarters with a 17-14, 7-15, 15-8 win over Daniel Shirley and Deamn Galt of New Zealand. Bristow, partnering Archana Deodhar, also entered the last 16 of mixed doubles with a 15-6, 15-6 victory over Andre Stewart and Nigella Sanders of Jamaica.
