MUMBAI, SEPT 17: Regardless of what happens in singles, our aim is to be world No 1 in doubles this year, said tennis player Leander Paes of his and partner Mahesh Bhupathi's plans for the year.Paes and Bhupathi, here for the announcement of the schedule and telecast of the Heineken Open 1998, agreed that even though their focus was on singles play, they will not let their doubles get affected adversely.
The two will be one of the major attractions at the Heineken Open -- organised by Sports Corporation to be played from October 10 at Singapore -- along with No 2 Marcelo Rios and Goran Ivanisevic. The tournament will be telecast on Star Sports.
``When we got together three years ago, we had a dream -- to be No 1. Over the years, we have learnt about each other and we continue to learn in our quest to be the best,'' said Paes, ranked third in the world with Bhupathi.
Though they have lost in four Grand Slam semi-finals, Paes said it was just a matter of time before they won a Slam. ``We win easilyenough till the semis and from then on, we just have to turn it on,'' said Paes, the more communicative of the two.
``If we play well, we will win. I am not being cocky, just confident,'' he added.
Of his win over Pete Sampras in the Pilot Pen International three weeks back, Paes said he will cherish the win, having recorded it on video and seen it twice.
Sampras got upset over a line call towards the end of the first set and I was able to capitalise on that, said the world No 83. ``But the win shows that my hard work is paying off,'' said the Orlando-based Indian.
Having seen Sampras, the world No 1, play at the same centre in Orlando turned out to be an advantage, said the Olympic bronze medallist, but the ``I have nothing to lose'' attitude probably helped him. Paes also defeated former French Open champion Sergei Bruguera and Swiss Marc Rosset before bowing out to Ivanisevic.
The sight of Indian boys playing in the US made Paes happy but still, there is the need for a professional setup andsponsorship in India. ``I got a lucky break with the Amritraj Academy (BAT) and Hesh (Bhupathi) was lucky too. But there still are so many kids in India who need a break.''
The former junior Wimbledon champion said that the more time he and Bhupathi spent here was better for Indian tennis. ``We get TV, sponsorship and help promote the sport which has grown a lot and still needs to grow,'' added Paes.
Bhupathi, who ranks Paes among the top players in the world as far as Davis Cup is concerned, said India had a chance against Britain who they play next in the Davis Cup. Though they have two players in the top 50, we still have a chance to win, said Bhupathi.
