Ami masters a golden feat

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, September 15: ``I really pushed myself to practice. My schedule almost matched what I used to do when I was young.'' Ami Shah nee Ghia revealed while speaking to Express Newsline today, after she won the badminton singles gold in the 40+ age group at the Nike World Masters Games held at Portland, USA, last month. She defeated former Chinese player Chan Sau-Yuk, who is now settled in Hong Kong, 11-8 11-0 in the final. Ami had beaten former World No 3 Xu Rong to win gold in the 35+ singles at the previous edition of the World Masters, held at Brisbane, Australia, four years ago.

In addition, the 7-times singles national champion and Arjuna Awardee notched two silver in the 35+ doubles and 40+ doubles, partnering Hufrish Nariman and Dr Padmini Desai respectively. Ami and Hufrish lost to Chan & Kwok 11- 15 12-15 in the final, while Padmini and Ami lost to British pair Davidson & Hurst in three close games, 9-15 15-1 12-15. ``We almost made it but tired out in the end. Playing at the Masters is lessabout badminton skills and more about fitness,'' Padmini opined while commenting on the loss.Other medal winners for India in badminton were: Dr Padmini Desai & Krishna Shanbag (mixed doubles 35+ silver); Pradeep Iyengar & Milind Ghate (35+ doubles silver); Milind Ghate (35+ singles bronze); Sudha Sharma (45+ singles silver); Subroto Banerjee (45+ singles silver). Hufrish also won a bronze in the 30+ women's doubles, partnering Sunny Kim of the US.The list may be incomplete, feels Pradeep Iyengar, ex-State champion, and currently a manager with Bharat Petroleum. ``There were participants from across the country, and we do not really know how many medals were won by Indians. We did not travel as a contingent and the matches were held at various venues.''

International Hufrish Nariman was critical of the manner in which the event was conducted. ``The organisation at the Games was not very good. We were playing nearly 7-8 matches a day and that got us down. The experience was good despite the exhaustingschedule,'' informed the Union Bank of India shuttler.

The main attraction at the tournament, however, was the participation of former World champions Zhao Jin Hua and Yang Yang in the 30+ event. The duo predictably made it 1-2 for China.
