GRP constables held for looting passenger

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NAGPUR, SEPT 18: Two constables of the Government Railway Police (GRP) here were booked on charges of looting a trader of Rs 6,000 aboard the Geetanjali Express last week. A GRP official, found to be in cahoots with the erring constables, has been suspended.

The incident occurred between Nagpur and Bhandara railway stations in the Geetanjali Express, where constables Madhusudan Bhawsar and Krupashankar Tiwari were posted on Monday last to guard a bogie.

The victim, Nekram Chenuram Patel (47), a resident of Dombanpura, Madhya Pradesh, was on his way from Badnera to Durg, where he works in a private firm.

Patel reportedly boarded a reserved sleeper class bogie at Badnera in the Geetanjali Express, though he did not possess a valid ticket. The two constables who were on guard duty inside the bogie spotted Patel when he was looking for space.

Bhawsar and Tiwari then went up to Patel and questioned him regarding his ticket. When Patel could not satisfy the constables, they searched Patel's baggage, andreportedly extracted money from the baggage. When Patel resisted, the constables threatened him of prosecution for not possessing a valid ticket.

Upon reaching Durg, Patel narrated the incident to his employer Babulal Agrawal, who, in turn, rushed to Nagpur and lodged a verbal complaint with Superintendent of Railway Police, Vineet Agrawal. The official ordered an inquiry in to the case.

Meanwhile, after getting to know that a complaint was lodged, a GRP official allegedly approached Babulal Agrawal with the money and requested him not to go ahead with the case.

However, Agrawal went ahead and lodged a complaint. An identification parade was conducted at the GRP station in Nagpur. Patel identified the two constables in presence of Babulal and Vineet Agrawal.

The constables have been arrested on charges of robbery.
