Mantilla wins Spanish duel

BOURNEMOUTH (ENGLAND), SEPT 18: Defending champion and No 3 seed Felix Mantilla of Spain defeated fellow Spaniard Jordi Burillo today 7-5, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the clay-court Samsung Open tennis tournament.

In other second-round matches today, No 2 seed Albert Costa of Spain won over Dennis van Scheppingen of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-2, and France's Arnaud Clement defeated Jan Kroslak of Slovakia 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

In the other second-round match, Austria's Stefan Koubek beat Todd Larkham of Australia 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.

In tomorrow's quarter-finals, the top match will feature No 1 seed Alberto Berasategui of Spain against Marc-Kevin Goellner of Germany. Berasategui has won their two previous matches, both on clay.

In other quarter-finals: Mantilla vs Koubek, Alex Lopez-Moron of Spain vs Vincenzo Santopadre of Italy, Clement vs Costa.

Henman advances

TASHKENT: Second-seeded Tim Henman of Britain easily dispatched Israel's Eyal Ran 6-4, 6-1 today to advance to the quarter-finals of the$500,000 President's Cup tournament on the ATP Tour.

Unseeded Karsten Braasch of Germany overcame fifth seed Marc Rosset, 6-4, 6-7 (8-6), 6-3. The victory by Braasch, who is ranked 330th by the ATP, came as the real surprise of the tournament.

In the toughest match of the second round, fourth seed Nicolas Escude of France outplayed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

Italian Stefano Pescosolido, third seed, had a tough time winning over Israeli Harel Levi, 2-6, 7-6 (6-1), 6-3.

Just like old times

PARIS: Argentina's Guillermo Vilas beat Bjorn Borg on the opening day today of the Compaq senior event, 20 years after losing to the Swede at the Roland Garros final.

Vilas, who at 46 is the oldest player at the Paris tournament, won 6-4, 2-6, 10-7, the last set being decided by a tie-break.

``Nothing has changed. Maybe you just feel that your half of the court is a little bigger to cover (than in the past),'' Vilas said.

In other action, 1983 Roland Garros winner Yannick Noahdefeated Sweden's Mikael Pernfors 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 defending champion John McEnroe beat Iran's Mansour Bahrami 6-1, 6-1, and Guy Forget beat Henri Leconte 6-3, 7-5 in an all-French encounter.

The Compaq senior tournament is the fourth stop on the Delta Airlines ATP Senior Tour of champions, part of the 1998-99 worldwide senior circuit, sanctioned by the ATP Tour and also including the Nuveen Tour in the United States and the Champions Tour.
