IUML opposes renaming of Red Fort
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, Sept 19: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) today took objection to the proposal of the Vajpayee Government to name Delhi's Red Fort after freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose and urged the Centre to drop the idea in this regard. ``It is shocking to learn from one of the recent public statements of Home Minister L K Advani that there is a proposal to change the name of Red Fort in Delhi,'' IUML President G M Banatwala said in a letter addressed to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee.``There can be no two opinions on the greatness of the leader Subhas Chandra Bose,'' Banatwala wrote to Vajpayee and said it was clear that the proposal was motivated by the ``unfortunate consideration to suppress a chapter in the history of India''.``Such motivated change in the names of historical places are highly objectionable,'' he wrote.Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
