Shivalik boys move into semis

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 20: Shivalik Public School (Chandigarh), riding on a hat-trick by Rajinder Singh, defeated Sports College (Lucknow) 5-0 to top Pool A and enter the semi-finals of the Sardar Mohan Singh hockey tournament at Shivaji Stadium, here today.

In the semi-finals to be played tommorrow, toppers of the Pool B -- Father Agnel Public School (New Delhi) -- will take on Pool A runners-up Sports College while Shivalik will clash with Pool B runners-up BRC (Danapur).

In the girls' section, SGNP School (Shahbad) thrashed Govt High School (Jharsa) 12-1 to enter the semi-finals while Queen Convent College (Lucknow) fought to 1-1 draw with Govt High School (Kila Raipur) in the boys section.

In the match between Shivalik Public School and Sports College, both teams failed to display a standard game. Lucknow team, despite having dominated the first half, failed to open the account as their forwards failed at the target. Rajinder drew first blood for Shivalik in the 32nd minute while in the 54th minute, Ranjeet Singh added another. Rajinder then went on to net three goals in a row, beginning with a penalty corner in 57th minute and adding two more to complete his hat-trick in the 68th and 69th minutes.

Surinder Kaur (1st), Kiran Saini (3rd, 4th, 17th and 49th), Rajinder Kaur (10th, 12th and 46th), Simarjeet Kaur (21st, 27th), Jasdeep Kaur (39th), Balwinder Kaur (43rd), were the scorers in SGNP's big win while Babita (50th) reduced the margin for the losers.

Kuldip Singh gave Kila Raipur school 1-0 lead in the 12th minute in a boys' Pool B match. But their joy was short-lived when Vinod Singh converted the penalty corner in the 38th minute to help Queen Convent draw parity.
