Lancashire finish second best to Leicestershire

 
LONDON, SEPT 21: Lancashire secured second place in the English County championship on the last day of the season, when they defeated Hampshire by 161 runs at Old Trafford.

Leicestershire had won the title on Saturday. Lancashire finished 15 points behind them, needing only 10 overs yesterday to capture the last two Hampshire wickets. It was their highest finish since 1987, when they were also runners-up.

Lancashire's great rivals Yorkshire finished in third place, their highest for 23 years.

At Derby: Derbyshire bt Middlesex by four wickets. Middlesex 195 and 354 (O Shah 116, P Weekes 96, M Gatting 62; K Dean 6-97). Derbyshire 383 and 167-6. Derbyshire 24 points, Middlesex 4.

At Cardiff:Glamorgan bt Somerset by 298 runs. Glamorgan 246 and 278-9 declared. Somerset 133 and 93 (O Parkin 5-24). Glamorgan 21 points, Somerset 4.

At Old Trafford:Lancashire bt Hampshire by 161 runs. Lancashire 185 and 449-4 decl (J Crawley 239, N Fairbrother 103 not out). Hampshire 172 and301 (D Kenway 57). Lancashire 20 points, Hampshire 4.

At Trent Bridge:Gloucestershire bt Nottinghamshire by 189 runs. Gloucestershire 319 and 411-7 declared (T Hancock 220 not out). Nottinghamshire 249 and 292 (C Tolley 78, G Archer 52; J Lewis 5-66, C Walsh 5-82). Gloucestershire 23 points, Nottinghamsire 5.

At Edgbaston:Warwickshire bt Kent by 186 runs. Warwickshire 323 and 262-5 declared (D Hemp 74, T Frost 50). Kent 197 (E Giddins 5-61) and 202 (E Smith 58). Warwickshire 2 points, Kent 4.

At Worcester:Worcestershire bt Durham by 155 runs. Worcestershire 310 and 312-9 declared (R Illingworth 84, G Haynes 52). Durham 342 and 125 (S Lampitt 5-39). Worcestershire 23 points, Durham 7.
