Cable row may be behind Zee director's death

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VIJAYAWADA, Sept 21: Potluri Ramakrishna, ZEE television resident director (south) and managing director of Siti Cable in Andhra Pradesh, was shot dead on Sunday night by unidentified assailants here. He had returned to Vijayawada the same morning after participating in the cable operators meeting held on Saturday evening in Hyderabad.

Special police teams have been sent to Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad as the police believe that those who masterminded the murder are based in either of the two cities.

The police are also investigating various other angles including the recent ESPN-cable television operators' row in which the slain chief of Siti Cable played a pivotal role. It was primarily because of Ramakrishna sticking to his guns that the Modi Entertainment Network (MEN), the authorised distributors of ESPN channel in India, budged from its stand on increased payment. Incidentally, Ramakrishna was shot dead within 28 hours of his resolving the ESPN-cable operators row.

Another angle being investigatedby the police is the involvement of a senior executive working with the Siti Cable at Visakhapatnam. Both, the senior executive and Ramakrishna, were not on good terms as they had some disagreement over the share in the income. In fact, Ramakrishna had also received a number of threatening calls from his rival, according to a written complaint lodged with the police by the Siti Cable chief's brother P Saibaba.

The involvement of some politicians, who could not establish their own cable network because of Ramakrishna's strong presence, is also not ruled out. Yet another angle being probed is the dispute over the payment among partners.

Starting from scratch, Ramakrishna emerged as the undisputed king in the cable TV network in the South. Long before the Siti Cable network system existed, Ramakrishna established his own channel called ``Master Channel'', bringing into his fold all the existing cable TV operators in the commercial city of Vijayawada. Perhaps for the first time in the country, he beamedfeature films simultaneously to all local cable TV operators in a city.

His scientific planning and meticulous execution of his plans were so well-planned that Zee Telefilms chairman Subash Chandra came all the way from Mumbai to reportedly studied the system Ramakrishna had adopted. Later Siti Cable network was established in a similar manner and soon gained popularity.
