CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS, Sept 21: Hurricane George tore into the Caribbean's northeastern islands ripping apart buildings, whipping up seas and threatening several million people with its destructive power.``I can see roofs and houses flying,'' a witness on the island of Desirade told French Overseas Radio, monitored in French Guyana.
``There is a lot of wind, rain and the sea is rough,'' she said, adding the destruction started around 2200 GMT. Desirade lies east of the French resort island of Guadeloupe.
The US national hurricane centre in Florida earlier yesterday rated George an ``extremely dangerous'' storm comparable to Hurricane Hugo, which caused billions of dollars in damage and killed more than two dozen people when it hit the Caribbean in 1989.
