Chopda chalks out a stunner

Sept 21: State sub-junior national champion Sagar Chopda knocked out top seed M Narayan in the junior boys semifinal of the Colgate MSSA inter-school badminton tournament, conducted by GMBA and CCI here today. The third seeded Sagar will now meet his doubles partner Anand Pawar in the finals.Sagar had defeated Anand in the final to grab the sub-junior title last year; and recently, Sagar had defeated Anand in the semi-final en route to the state title. Anand will be thirsting for revenge, and their showdown promises to be the match to look forward to. In the senior girls semifinal, Sumitra Gantayat of Atomic Energy gave top seed Nikita Hurkadli a scare before bowing out 3-11 11-4 2-11. Sumitra, not seeded in the draw, had the consolation of claiming the bronze medal when the second losing semi-finalist, third seed Amodi Borkar, conceded the tie. Sushil Sawant of Antonio D'Silva capped his excellent run to set up a clash with favourite Swapnil Vyavaharkar in the senior boys final, while defending championRiddhi Panjwani will take on Maitreyee Nigwekar in the sub-junior girls final.
